Harvest Moon GB (and Harvest Moon GBC, in color) is a game in the Harvest Moon series of video games developed by Pack-In-Video. HMGB is the first of the portable Harvest Moon games.

Story: After facing his death, the character's grandfather visits the player as a spirit and asks them to run his farm. As with any Harvest Moon game, they accept, and begin their life as Ranch Master.

[edit] Gameplay

The initial goal is that in a year's time, the character must bring up the farm by growing and selling crops, and raising livestock. There are also plenty of secrets to unlock in the game. At the end of the first year, the main character's grandfather (still in spirit form) comes back to the farm to check up on it. If he thinks it's looking good, the player may continue the game for another couple years. If he thinks the farm is short of success, a Game Over is given.

[edit] Crops

Crops are a primary source of income in Harvest Moon GB. After being planted, the seeds must be watered every day until they can be harvested. All harvested crops (along with anything sellable) may be put in the shipping bin to be sold. Some crops can be re-harvested a number of days after the initial harvest. Oddly, crops can be grown in Winter.

[edit] Animals

[edit] Pets

At the beginning of the game the option is given whether to have a dog or a cat as a pet. Neither choice affects the gameplay.

[edit] Cow

Up to four cows can be bought. Cows can be milked, which can sell for profit. Milk can also be converted into cheese with the Cheese Maker, and into butter with the Butter Churner. Medicine is used to cure sick cows, and a First Aid Kit can make a cow immune from disease forever. Miracle Potions can impregnate cows, which is cheaper than buying a new one.

[edit] Chicken

Up to four chickens can be bought. Chickens lay eggs which can be sold. Super-rare Golden Chickens lay golden eggs, which sell for much more than standard eggs. After buying one chicken, its eggs can be hatched for free, as opposed to buying a new chicken.

[edit] Horse

The horse is obtained early on in the game. It can be ridden, and a saddlebag can be bought for it, which works as a portable shipping bin. The horse cannot get sick, and does not produce any sellable goods.

[edit] Tools and Items

There is a wide variety of tools in Harvest Moon GB. At the beginning of the game, the tools available are the Axe, Hoe, Hammer, Watering Can, and Sickle.

[edit] Axe

The axe is used to destroy tree stumps that litter the farm at the beginning of the game. It takes six chops to destroy a stump, which is then turned into several pieces of lumber and sent to the wood shed. Lumber can be used to build fences, and "un-till" soil. The Golden Axe is given to the main character by the Goddess Spring. This powered-up axe can chop a tree stump in one swing.

[edit] Hoe

The hoe is used to till soil for seeds to be planted in. Soil should usually be tilled in a 3x3 grid pattern, as this is the pattern in which seeds are sown. The Golden Hoe is found via the Harvest Sprites, and can till 6 plots of soil (in a horozontal or vertical line) in one swing when powered up.

[edit] Hammer

The hammer is used to crush rocks, and fence segments that are broken somehow. It takes one hit to break a small rock and a broken fence; six to break a large rock. The Golden Hammer is a free gift for remodeling the house, and can break large rocks in one hit.

[edit] Sickle

The Sickle is used to cut down tall grass and weeds (although weeds can be picked up and dropped to be destroyed). Cut grass is turned into fodder, which is used to feed cows and chickens. When not fed, animals will not give off produce for a couple days. The Golden Sickle is a reward from the Harvest Sprites, and can mow down a 3x3 plot of grass in one cut.

[edit] Watering Can

The Watering can is a vital tool in the game, as it is used to water crops. It waters one plot of soil at a time, which slowly lowers its water supply. When it empties, the can must be refilled in a small pond on the farm. The sprinkler can be bought for 2000G; it can water a 3x3 grid of crops (a real time saver), and does not need refills like the watering can does.
