From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hartman Bache (1798-1872) was an American engineer who participated in the construction of many of the earliest lighthouses on the West Coast. He made a number of sketches of these lighthouses and light stations which have since become an important resource in the study of American lighthouses. He was also involved in the construction of railroads, canals, and defenses.

Bache was named director of the Bureau of Topographical Engineers in 1861, and spent much of the Civil War serving on the East Coast. He retired in 1867 and was promoted to brigadier general
