Hartington is a city in Cedar County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,640 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cedar CountyGR6.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,640 people, 670 households, and 416 families residing in the city. The population density was 703.6/km² (1,821.5/mi²). There were 738 housing units at an average density of 316.6/km² (819.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.15% White, 0.12% Native American, 0.06% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.24% of the population.
There were 670 households out of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% were married couples living together, 4.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% were non-families. 34.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 25.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,365, and the median income for a family was $43,897. Males had a median income of $30,848 versus $18,452 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,133. About 1.7% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.0% of those under age 18 and 11.1% of those age 65 or over.
