Hart Perry

During the last 30 years working as a filmmaker, Hart Perry has carved out three distinct reputations: social and music documentarian, cameraman and artist. In 1969 he was the youngest cameraman at the legendary Woodstock music festival and in 1970 he directed his first music video, "Alice Cooper." Twenty years later he produced "Fight the Power Live," the first Public Enemy longform video. In 1977 he shot the Academy Award-winning Harlan County: USA with Barbara Kopple, and in the 80s shot Kopple’s "American Dream,” which also won an Academy Award. In 1992 he teamed up with Jonathan Demme to make Haiti:Killing the Dream, a film about the rise and deposing of peoples' hero, Jean-Claude Aristide. Says Hart, who was a student at Columbia University during the rebellions of the late 60s: "Music and politics are twin passions that have always moved me as a filmmaker."
Perry Films, Inc. features the work of producer/directors, Hart and Dana Perry, who are best known for their original and innovative documentaries and high production standards. The company's expertise lies primarily in cinema verité and archival documentaries, as well as art projects. Perry Films pioneered music videos, music documentaries and music long forms. In addition, Hart has shot three Academy Award winning documentaries. Dana's work reflects her skills in producing, archival research and editing. Having produced over 50 films since it was founded in 1989, Perry Films has an extensive archive of interviews and rare footage of late 20th century events and people.
Unsurprisingly, some of Hart's favorite projects have been those that combined music and politics. John Hammond: From Bessie Smith to Bruce Springsteen (1989) was a Peabody Award-winning film biography of the seminal music critic and producer with a social conscience, who was an early advocate of integration in popular music and society. A few years earlier, Hart co-produced "The Making of Sun City," a Grammy-nominated documentary devoted to the efforts of a group of popular musicians to organize a performers' boycott of apartheid-era South Africa. "Sun City" was followed by Hart's launching of Danny Schechter’s "South Africa Now," the Polk Award-winning public television series that breached South Africa's international news blackout. When MTV started in the 80s, Hart’s music videos found a wider audience. Later with his wife, Dana Perry, he pioneered music documentaries that looked behind the music. These include the five-part VH1 retrospective The Seventies (1996), the four-part ABC Television celebration Motown 40 (1998), Rhythm, Country, and Blues (1996), which examined the common musical and social ground occupied by black and white musicians who in their youth were segregated, and the Cable Ace Award winning Leonard Bernstein’s New York.
During this time Hart also pursued art projects. In the 70s he received a Guggenheim Fellowship for the invention of a holographic film process. His holograms of computer generated images produced in the early 70s were innovative and have been widely exhibited. In addition he produced holograms for Salvador Dali and the Mabou Mines.

Dana Heinz Perry recently completed "And You Don't Stop: 30 Years of Hip Hop" for VH1. Executive produced by Russell Simmons, the five-part documentary series traces the origins of hip hop from its unlikely birth amidst the poverty and isolation of the South Bronx in the early 1970's all the way through its cultural and economic explosion at the turn of the millennium. Producer/director/exec.producer. Also recently completed was "Imagining America: Icons of 20th Century American Art" for PBS - Co-producer with director Hart Perry. Imagining America is scheduled to air in the Spring of 2005.
In 2002, she produced VH1 Remembers: The Concert for New York City - a documentary look back at the star-studded fundraiser for the victims and families of September 11th. The show featured concert highlights and interviews with Bon Jovi, Billy Crystal, Melissa Etheridge, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and others. In 2000, Perry produced and directed nine short music documentaries for The Experience Music Project, a multi-media rock 'n roll museum in Seattle funded by Paul Allen and designed by Frank Gehry - permanent collection. The film's subjects range from Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix to Punk and Hip Hop. She also produced The Human Canvas, a one-hour documentary special on tattooing and extreme body modification for The Learning Channel, which aired in April 2000.
She is the producer/director/editor of the documentary special Making A Noise: A Native American Musical Journey with Robbie Robertson with Robbie Robertson, which aired on over 200 PBS stations nationwide. "Making A Noise" opened the 1999 American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco and was exhibited at the Two Rivers Arts Festival at the Walker Arts Center, the Hot Springs Documentary Festival, the 2002 Santa Fe Film Festival and the 2002 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Featured on CNN, Charlie Rose and CBS Sunday Morning.
In 1998, she produced the acclaimed four-hour documentary special Motown 40: The Music is Forever for ABC. With husband and partner, Hart Perry, she produced the five-hour music documentary series VH1 Presents the 70's and directed two of the programs: The Sexes and Disco Explosion (August '96).
