IMDb profile

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a planned future movie based on J. K. Rowling's sixth book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Production is in planning stages. Casting for some returning actors has taken place: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, who have portrayed Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, respectively, for the first five films, will all return for this installment as well as the seventh.[1] The film is scheduled for a US and UK release on November 21, 2008.[2]

David Heyman, the film's producer, along with David Barron,[1] has said that Steve Kloves, though not writing the fifth movie, will return as screenwriter for this film.[3]

Filming is scheduled to start in September 2007.[4] Some sources have rumored that filming may move from the UK, where all of the previous five films have been shot. This is North Scotland reported filming will take place in New Zealand, due to the "more agreeable economy and climate" and lack of Scottish funding.[5] The Sunday Business Post in Ireland has noted that the film's producers and WB executives have been scouting there, specifically Leinster and Munster because they "believe they have now exhausted possible locations in Britain." They are "particularly keen on Ireland, as the landscape is similar to Britain and will appear similar to the settings of the previous films."[6]

[edit] Search for a director

No director has been officially chosen to helm the film, though many have been offered the job, and previous directors have expressed an interest in returning.[2] Director of the first and second Potter films Chris Columbus said he would return as director if, and only if, the actors he originally cast as the trio (Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson) are not replaced for this film;[17] subsequent reports have confirmed these three actors' returns,[1] but Columbus has not commented. Alfonso Cuarón, the director of the third film, Prisoner of Azkaban, has said he "would love to have the opportunity" to return.[18] Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell declined a spot to direct the fifth film, and there have been no reports of his being approached for this film.[19]

In addition, Terry Gilliam was rumored on the Internet Movie Database to direct the film, though his name was quickly removed. He was Rowling's personal choice to direct Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. However, Gilliam has since said, "Warner Bros. had their chance the first time around, and they blew it."[20] Matthew Vaughn and James McTeigue have reportedly been approached as well.[21] M. Night Shyamalan was also approached at one point, but has since declined the position,[21] and said that he would like to try his own hand at writing an adaptation of a book before attempting to take on Harry Potter.[22] Access Hollywood reported that Michael Hoffman was in talks to direct,[23] though the rumor was debunked within a few days.[24] Most recently, Production Weekly and Entertainment Weekly claimed that Order of the Phoenix director David Yates was offered the role by Warner Bros.[25][19]

On November 13, Warner Bros. announced that nobody was yet in negotiations to direct.[26] It had been repeatedly reported that around Christmas 2006, Warner Bros. would make a decision regarding the director;[21][23] yet, as of April 2007, there has been no announcement.

[edit] Set design

As of February 2007, Stuart Craig has been designing sets for the film, including the astronomy tower where the climax of the film takes place.[27]
