Harry Ord

Major-General Sir Harry St. George Ord (1819–1885) was Governor of Western Australia from 1877 to 1880. He was born in North Cray, Kent on 4th August 1819, the son of Henry Gough Ord and grandson of Craven Ord a prominent antiquarian. Following a successful army career he became a colonial administrator. He was Governor of Dominica (1857 - 1861), Governor of Bermuda (1861-1864) and Governor of the Straits Settlements from April 1, 1867 till November 4, 1873. He was created a baronet in 1877 on his appointment as Governor of Western Australia. He married Julia Graham of Exmouth in 1846 by whom he had three sons. He died on 20th August 1885.
