Harcourt Fenton "Harry" Mudd, played by Roger C. Carmel, is a fictional con man in the Star Trek universe. His character appears in the original series episodes "Mudd's Women" and "I, Mudd", as well as the Star Trek: The Animated Series episode "Mudd's Passion".

He also has a brief appearance in the video game titled "Star Trek: The 25th Anniversary Edition" and is the star of DC Comics' Mudd's Magic (Star Trek No. 40, 1987).

When he first appears in the Star Trek universe (in "Mudd's Women"), Mudd uses the alias of Leo Walsh.

His grandson, Horace Tiberius Mudd, appears in the Malibu Comics Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Nos. 26-27 (1995).

Mudd is a roguish trader, never an outright villain. He is always seen attempting some get-rich-quick scheme involving the shallow side of love: transporting mail-order brides whose beauty was the result of an illegal drug in "Mudd's Women," ruling over an almost exclusively female population of androids in "I, Mudd," and dealing "love crystals" in "Mudd's Passion."

For Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the production staff produced a number of bottles for Quark's Bar, including bottles of Raktajino Klingon coffee. The writing on the bottles is difficult to discern on screen, but the book The Art of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine has a close up of one of the bottles, which is clearly labeled as having been grown on Earth and imported by Harcourt Fenton Mudd. Because these bottles were seen on screen, it has become canon that Mudd started a business growing and distributing the coffee; this business was successful and lasted into the 2370s.

An episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation was to feature Mudd, awakening from cryogenic suspension to find himself aboard the Enterprise-D. After Roger C. Carmel's death, the episode was heavily rewritten and eventually became "The Neutral Zone", with the character of Mudd being replaced by 20th-century businessman Ralph Offenhouse (played by Peter Mark Richman).

Mudd will appear in an episode of Star Trek: New Voyages entitled "The Sky Above, The Mudd Below". The episode will be directed by longtime Trek actor J.G. Hertzler, who will also be playing Mudd. [1]
