Harry D. Jacobs High School (commonly referred to as Jacobs, HDJ, or JHS) is a public high school for students in grades 9 through 12 located in Algonquin, Illinois serving students from the Village of Algonquin and its surrounding areas, including students of Carpentersville, Gilberts, and Lake in the Hills, Illinois. The school is located at 2601 Bunker Hill Drive, placing it firmly within the boundaries of McHenry County, Illinois.

Harry D. Jacobs High School is part of Community Unit School District 300, and one of three high schools serving the district. Feeder schools to Jacobs include Algonquin Middle School, Westfield Community School, and Dundee Middle School. The school is also a member of the Illinois High School Association, Fox Valley Conference.

The school colors are brown and gold, and the mascot is the 'Golden Eagle'.

Over two thousand students (roughly 2,200) are currently in attendance at Jacobs, causing construction and modifications to the school to occur during the 2006-2007 school year to accommodate both the large number of current students and the expected influx of new students in approaching years.

[edit] Scheduling

Jacobs is known for following the Block scheduling system as opposed to a traditional class scheduling system. Students attending Jacobs have three to four classes per day, each of a ninety minute duration, with a thirty minute 'Flex Block' designed for students to eat lunch in addition to acting as an interim resource class.

  • Josh Caterer (class of 1990) — Singer, songwriter and frontman of the rock band Smoking Popes
  • Kevin Slimko (also known as "Slim the Barber") (class of 1993) — Barber and actor featured on the Chicago Access Network cable TV show Barbershop Hip Hop
  • Karen Drew (class of 1988) - Investigative reporter and anchor, WOIO-TV in Cleveland, OH
  • Ben Greeno (class of 2002) — Drummer for the band The Redwalls
  • Ann Cline - was president of the Algonquin/Lake In The Hills Jaycees and is a "local celebrity". She currently is a columnist for the Northwest Herald.

Below is an incomplete list of some of the organizations and student clubs offered by the school

  • Interact - Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young students ages 14-18. The program gives students the opportunity to participate in meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends. Through service activities, members learn the importance of:
    • Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others and their community
    • Developing leadership skills and personal integrity
    • Advancing international understanding and good will
  • HDJ Chess Club - The Chess Club was established in 2004 and is a place for anyone to come and play chess against other HDJ students for fun. However, the club hosted its first tournament in 2006 and another in 2007. Chess Club currently has plans to play other schools in tournaments starting in the 2007-2008 school year.
  • Model United Nations - The HDJMUN is currently in its first year and offers students interested in politics and international relations an opportunity to learn how the United Nations works. Students participating in the club travel to other schools and universities and represent countries on certain topics.

  • HDJ is named after one of the first superintendents of CUSD 300.
  • The school colors are brown and gold, but the varsity athletic teams wear black instead of brown.
