Harrison College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harrison College is an elite grammar school in Bridgetown, Barbados. Founded in 1733 as an all-boys school, it first accepted girls in the early 1980s.

Since Barbados became an independent country in 1966, all five Prime Ministers of the country have been alumni of Harrison College. For many years Harrison College was recognized as the undisputed top school on the island on the basis of academic and sporting merit as well as the great success of many of its alumni in the Barbadian political and commercial scene. In recent times, however, there has been some debate as to whether the school still holds this position due to the fact that its students have been receiving comparatively fewer Barbados Scholarships in the past few years. This trend, however, can be seen to exist among several of the island's Top Secondary Schools and has been attributed to the imbalanced and disproportionate method for the allocation of scholarships to students rather than a decline in merit.
