Harringay Arena

Harringay Arena, Officially the Harringay Boxing and Ice Skating Arena, opened in North London opened in 1936, was a venue for boxing and circus during the first half of the twentieth century. The Horse of the Year show was also held there for its first ten years, from 1947 onwards. The Harringay Racers and Harringay Greyhounds ice hockey teams played out of the Arena. Another event, unique to the Harringay Arena in 1953, was the American event 'The Roller Derby'. This roller skating activity was a little like stock car racing, but on roller skates. It epitomized everything that a Briton regarded as unsportsmanlike!
American evangelist Billy Graham held his first 'Crusade' in the UK at the Arena from 1st March - 12th May 1954. It was the first of 23 'Crusades' and 'Missions' that he held in the UK between 1954 and 1991.
