Harperley

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harperley is a small village in County Durham, in England. It is situated between Tantobie to the north east, Tanfield Lea to the east and Annfield Plain and Catchgate to the west.

Harperley is split into two parts. The southern part (consisting of five houses) is set around crossroads from which there is easy access to West Kyo, Catchgate, Annfield Plain and Stanley. The northern part (consisting of two houses, a bungalow and a farm) is grouped around the 'Harperley Hotel, a public house known locally for meals and hosting wedding functions. Recently the hotel has become well known in the locale for employing staff and then refusing to pay them. They are currently facing litigation from a number of quarters, the results of which will be posted on here in due course.

The litigation was a success, and the management were ordered to pay certain sums of money. They failed to do this, sending themselves into liquidation in an attempt to carry on trading elsewhere. They are currently trading as proprieters of The Lambton Worm at Chester Le Street, Co; Durham. Traders supplying goods to these unscrupulous people ought to be aware that they will, in all likelihood, suffer the same fate as many former employees. Litigation is currently being undertaken against Julie Gittins, the former proprietor of the now defunct Harperley Hotel. The results will be posted here in due course.

The grounds surrounding the Harperley Hotel used to be the site of a zoo (in the 1960s) and a children's playground (as late as the 1970s). A local stream called the Kyo Burn flows through the grounds, which lower down it's course is known as Beamish Burn and later the River Team before it flows into the River Tyne.
