Harp in the South

The Harp in the South is a novel (ISBN 0-14-010456-9) by Australian author Ruth Park. The story is set in Surry Hills, where the author herself lived. It was written in 1948, and portrays the life of a Catholic Irish family, the Darcys, living in Surry Hills, which was at that time an inner city slum.
The book has enjoyed widespread international success up until the present, and is frequently used in Australia as a Higher School Certificate study text.

A serialised TV adaptation was made for Australian television and broadcast on the Ten Network in 1987 and subsequently published on consumer video formats.
