Harold Evensky (Born September 9, 1942[1]) is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), an Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF™)[2], an author & editor, and an engineer[3].

Born Harold Ray Evensky in Memphis, Tennessee; Harold moved to New Orleans with his family at age 4. Harold earned a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Masters of Science from Cornell University[4] in Upstate New York. Before becoming a financial adviser, Harold worked as an engineer in Louisiana, Ohio and Florida.

After some time as a Vice President of an Investment Company, he and his cousin, Peter Brown, opened up a private practice in 1986 under the name Evensky & Brown. In 1990, Deena Katz, a financial adviser from Chicago, merged her practice to form Evensky, Brown & Katz, were he serves as Company Chairman[5]. The new firm would go through a number of changes, from adding a new partner, Robert Levitt, and his name to the company only to part ways some years later[6], the retirement of his co-founder in the early part of the 21st Century[7], and the company's 20th anniversary relaunch as Evensky & Katz in 2004.

In the middle 1990’s, Evensky married Deena Katz in Miami[8]. Harold is twice married with two children, Elizabeth and David, from his first marriage.[9]

Mr. Evensky’s legacy to the industry is seen through his personal appearances to adviser organizations and his development of codifying his successful practice style through literary works. Harold has addressed conferences throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom[10] with his partners and his associate advisers.

Harold is frequently quoted in a number of financial trade publications, newspapers, internet articles, Blogs, and magazines. Harold is a contributing writer for Financial Advisor Magazine, The Asian Financial Planning Journal[11], and a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Financial Planning[12].

In January of 1990, Harold authored the 85 page paperback entitled Planning for Long-Health Care (Real Life, Real Answers) (ISBN 0-395-51099-6) about the financial and mental ordeal of struggled with medical care. In August of 1996, Harold’s first major hardcover financial guide for the financial planning community titled Wealth Management: The Financial Advisor’s Guide to Investing and Managing Your Client’s Assets (ISBN 0-7863-0478-2), a work that focuses on the scholarly approach to investing theory that outlines the art in financial planning. The book has been translated into various languages including Japanese, Spanish, Korean, and Italian, and is one of the best selling books in its category[13][14]. In February of 1999, Y2K and Your Money (ISBN 0-9670146-0-3), was a 90 page paperback tool for advisers and clients to prepare for the Y2K bug and other end of the millennium issues.

He has also co-edited two books with her partner/wife, Deena Katz, titled The Investment Think Tank: Theory, Strategy, and Practice For Advisers (ISBN 1-57660-165-X) & Retirement Income Redesigned : Master Plans for Distribution: An Adviser's Guide for Funding Boomers' Best Years (ISBN 1-57660-189-7 by Bloomberg Press) where he also wrote a chapter for each.

In addition to his literary works in the field of Financial Planning, Mr. Evensky is has also served on a number of different Financial Advisory Boards, including as Chairperson of the TIAA-CREF Institute Advisory Board, the International CFP Council, the CFP Board of Governors, the CFP Board of Examiners, and the CFP Board of Appeals[15][16], as well as a member of the National Board of the IAFP & the Charles Schwab Institutional Advisory Board and Council. Currently Harold serves as a member of the Financial Planning Association, the Academy of Financial Services, The CFA Institute, and as an association member of the American Bar Association.

Harold was named one of the five Movers, Shakers & Decision Makers, The Most Influential People in the Financial Planning Profession, by Financial Planning Magazine. He is also cited by Accounting Today in their Top Ten Names to Know in Financial Planning. Worth Magazine named Mr. Evensky as one of the top 100 Financial Advisers each year from 2002 - 2006[17].

Investment Advisor has named both he and his wife/partner as members of The IA 25, a listing a the most influential people in finance on multiple occasions[18][19]. The 2004 addition, appearing in May of that years, featured both of them on the cover with President George W. Bush & Senator John Kerry, Former FED Chair Alan Greenspan, New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, Schwab Institutional President Debroah McWhinney, & TD Ameritrade Institutional President J. Thomas Bradley. In January 2004, he appeared on the cover of Investment Advisor with his wife about the changes to firm, their personal life, and on the profession over the previous number of years[20].

In 2002, Mr. Evensky’s paper titled Changing Equity Premium Implications for Wealth Management Portfolio Design, won the Journal of Financial Planning Call for Papers competition, and in 1999 Harold was award the Dow Jones Investment Advisor Portfolio Management Award for Lifetime Achievement[21]. His firm has pioneered the investment strategy of Core & Satellite, a relatively new strategy the uses passive management over "Core" positions and a blend of passive and active management over opportunity driven Satellite positions[22]. His firm's fee schedule was praised by Investment Advisor Magazine as an example of integrating Wealth Management & Advisory Services.[23]
