The music was written by Richard Rodgers, the lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The song was published in 1949. The song was introduced in the Broadway musical South Pacific.
In June 1982, The Damned's bassist Captain Sensible scored an unlikely #1 single on the UK singles chart for two weeks with his version of the song.
