  • Happenstance is a novel by the Canadian author Carol Shields, originally published as two separate novels: The Husband's Story (1980) and A Fairly Conventional Woman (renamed in Happenstance as 'The Wife's Story') (1982). It tells the two parallel stories of Jack and Brenda Bowman as they face their first real time apart in all their years of marriage. Shields won the Pulitzer Prize for a later novel, probably her most famous, The Stone Diaries (1993).
