[edit] History

[edit] Establishment

Hansung Airlines was established in 2004 to serve as regional low-cost airline of Chungcheong Province of South Korea. It is implied by its original name, "Chungcheong Airlines (충청항공)." As the regional airline, Hansung Airlines agreed with the city of Cheongju and University of Chungcheong to cooperate. Hansung Airlines ordered 1 ATR72-200 from ATR of France on August, 2004. It finished all its paper works by August 2005, and had its maiden flight on August 31, 2005 from Cheongju and Jeju Airport.

[edit] Development

Hansung Airlines claims to be the first regional low-cost carrier in the South Korean airline market. Because it was the first reginal low-cost airline, it drew many attention of the public and it was relatively cheaper than other major domestic airlines services provided by Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, its popularity sharply arose. This popularity caused establishment of other regional airline, Jeju Air. Hansung Airlines ordered its second aircraft in October 2006. With its second aircraft, Hansung Airlines started its flight service between Gimpo International Airport and Jeju International Airport.

[edit] Declination

But Hansung Airlines started to undergo difficulties caused by internal conflicts by administration. Moreover, the first accident of Hansung Airlines took place on November 28, 2006. While landing at Jeju International Airport, nose gear of the aircraft had broken, resulting in 6 minor injuries of crews and passengers. As the result of this accident, the runaway at Jeju International Airport had been closed for four hours. This accident had struck Hansung Airlines' credit as well as that of Jeju Air. Currently Hansung Airlines' broken aircraft is under repairing procedure, and will continue to operate in June 2007. Hansung Airlines tried to recover its credit and popularity after the accident by lowering cost, but still many people hesitate to use Hansung Airlines, questioning its safety.
