The soundtrack for the Disney Channel original series Hannah Montana was released on October 24, 2006 via Walt Disney Records. The first eight songs on the album are sung by the character Hannah Montana, who is played by Miley Cyrus. There are also four songs by other artists, and another track, the last on the album, that is sung by Cyrus (out of her Hannah Montana character) and her father Billy Ray Cyrus. The soundtrack was the eighth best selling album of 2006 in the U.S., with nearly two million copies sold that year.[1]

The album debuted at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200,[2] where it remained in its second week[3] before falling from the top position. Eight songs have charted on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Best of Both Worlds" and "Who Said", which have both peaked at #92, and "If We Were A Movie" (peaking at #47). The Soundtrack has 2 Discs in the Limited Edition version. The first disc is an Audio disc with 13 songs with a new bonus track, sit song "Nobody's Perfect" by Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana), and the second disc is a DVD containing 5 music videos used in the show from January 15, 2006. The Special Edition soundtrack was released on March 20, 2007.

[edit] Album re-release

In April 2007 Miley hinted to “CosmoGirl” Magazine that she may be re-releasing the “Hannah Montana” album with a more mature feel. She stated that she was recording some tracks that she had wrote herself and was hoping for them to be included in a special edition version of the record.

Disney executives have yet to comment on this subject but a possible cover design has already begun to circulate: [3]

[edit] Sales and chart positions

[edit] Album

The soundtrack debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling 281,000 copies in its first week and beating out such artists as John Legend and My Chemical Romance's album The Black Parade.[2] and the album held its ground in its second week, remaining at the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 with 203,000 copies sold, slightly more than the debut of music legend Barry Manilow's album The Greatest Songs of the Sixties.[3] In its third week on the chart, it fell to number five with 131,000 copies sold,[4] and stayed at fifth for its fourth week.[5] It then fell to seventh in week five, although sales increased 47% in the same week, with 167,000 copies sold.[6] The album rose to number two in its sixth week, but sales decreased by 6% this week, with 157,000 copies sold.[7] That same week, it broke one million sales. In the seventh week, it fell to number four, although it again increased in sales by 47%, with 243,000 copies sold;[8] it was also certified double platinum. In its eighth week, it moved up to number three on the chart and sold 274,000 copies.[9] In week nine, it again rose to number two with strong sales of 349,000 copies;[10] this may be because of the increase in sales during the holidays. After Christmas, in its tenth week, the album fell sharply to number 10 and sold 78,000 copies.[11] In the album's eleventh week on the chart, sales declined, with 46,000 copies sold, but the album nevertheless rose on the chart to number six.[12]

The album was the first TV soundtrack to debut on the chart at number one, and the first from a TV series in 20 years to hold the number one position (another Disney TV soundtrack, the High School Musical soundtrack, reached number one earlier in 2006, but it was from a TV movie rather than a series).[13] In December 2006, the album was certified Double Platinum. The album went Gold in the UK in just 4 weeks.
