Hanky Panky was the second and final single released from Madonna's 1990 I'm Breathless album. The song peaked at #10 in the U.S. and was certified Gold. It peaked at #2 in the UK. The accompanying music video was a live performance filmed in Canada from her Blond Ambition Tour, dubbed with the recorded version. The track was also performed on Madonna's 2004 Re-Invention Tour.

The song caused some controversy when it was released because of its innuendo and racy lyrics. Madonna only fueled the fire when she explained the song's meaning during her appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show close to the time of its release. She said that the song was about a spanking but not the kind that you get when you're bad.

While single didn't have exceptional airplay, it had solid sales that let it enter the top ten on the U.S. charts.

[edit] Charts

"Hanky Panky" entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at #40, the week of June 30, 1990, while "Vogue" was slowly descending from the chart. The single was out of the Top 40 by its eighth week, fueled mainly by single sales.

This song was the first Madonna single since "Like A Virgin" not to chart in the French official singles chart, this being party due to the fact that very few copies of the single under its vinyl format were available in stores.
