Handsworth Booth Street tram stop

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Handsworth, Booth Street tram stop is a tram stop in Handsworth, Birmingham England. It was opened on 31 May 1999 and is situated on Midland Metro Line 1.

[edit] History

Handsworth, Booth Street was opened in 1854 as Handsworth & Smethwick railway station on the GWR line from Birmingham Snow Hill station to Wolverhampton Low Level.

The station's architecture was reminiscent of that of other stations and was almost exactly the same as Wednesbury Central.

Closure of the line due to a decline in funding resulted in the closure of the station in 1972 and much of the site was demolished. In 1999, a new tram track was laid and the station was opened on the Midland Metro line named as Handsworth, Booth Street.
