Mobile phone handsfree are used when talking. In some countries, it is obligatory to use handsfree, when using a mobile telephone while driving. However, some studies have shown that, even while using a hands-free unit, there is still a higher risk of collision, owing to distraction.

In a new law, introduced in the United Kingdom in 2003, it is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving.[1] Similar laws have been adopted in New York, Connecticut, California and Washington, DC, in the U.S.A.. Many of these laws make provisions for the use of handsfree devices in vehicles. By now (May 2006), handheld use of a mobile phone, whilst driving, is illegal in the majority of western Europe and in Hong Kong. In the Netherlands, fines are at the same level as the price of a professionally-installed handsfree set.

Handsfree equipment is also available for normal phones, in both wired and wireless models.

Handsfree devices usually connect through a 2.5mm 'submini' Tip ring sleeve connector or the normal connector of the phone.
