[edit] Origins
Hand Tennis originated in late 2006 during a morning homebase in Dorseyville Middle School. The creators of it are Sumeer Sandhu and Albert John "A.J." Anderson.
[edit] Equipment Needed and Setup
Players need no equipment except two tables/desks and a small rubber ball about the size of a traditional tennis ball. The desks should be positioned about one and a half ball lengths from each other with the wider sides running parallel to each other. There must be a gap in the middle. In skilled and fast paced games, you can not always tell precisely where the ball hits, therefore without the gap, players and judges would not know who won the point, and serves would be impossibly difficult to return successfully.
[edit] Rules
The rules of Hand Tennis are very similar to that of ping-pong. The rules of Hand Tennis include:
- In every Tournament game, there is a judge on hand.
- The lower ranked player serves first, and the players then switch off serves every two points.
- Serves must be hit out of the air (the ball may be bounced off the ground) and bounce once on the server's side before passing over the gap and bouncing only once on the opposing side. Serves that bounce twice are counted as points for the non-serving player. This is to dissuade excessively soft and low serves (this was a staple of the game in it's early stages)
- Shots that hit the opposing player's inside edge and do not bounce forward onto their table are counted as points for the non hitting player
- Shots that hit the opposing players inside edge and continue onto their side (bouncing onto their side) are played as if they never hit the inner edge
- Shots that hit the outside or back edge (back being the side parallel to the player) and bounce of in an unpredictable manner are ruled as in play, and are considered a shot of exponential skill
- Serves that do not cross the back plain, but instead cross the side plain of the non-serving player's table are counted as a point the non-serving player (this is often left to the disgression of the judge in tournament play.
- Shots missing the playing surface completely are ruled as points in favor of the person who did not attempt the shot
- When playing indoors, there is a rule regarding excessive height when "spiking" the ball: If a player spikes the ball and the ball hits the ceiling, the ball is dead immediately, and the point automatically goes to the non-spiking player
- Games are played to 11 points and the victor must win by at least 2 points
- Overtime rules are as follows: In the event that the score of the game surpasses the regular 11 points, due to the required point differential of 2 points to win, the players take turns serving every point, instead of the regular 2 serves - 2 serves method that has been found to work best in regulation and tournament play. All other rules remain unchanged.
Additional rules can be added as needed to adjust to surroundings, or to put handicaps in place, although this is generally not recommended by the HTA.
[edit] Hand Tennis Association (HTA)
The HTA (A.K.A. the Pro Circuit) was formed between the formation of the game and the beginning of the first tournament. The HTA hosted its first ever tournament beginning on Wednesday March 28, 2007. For more information on the tournaments see the below section. The HTA does not sanction the playing of doubles's matches as they have been found to "not work very well".
