Hamstead Marshall

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hamstead Marshall is a village and civil parish in Berkshire, England.

It is situated in the district of West Berkshire, south-west of Newbury, not far from the Berkshire-Hampshire border.

It is the possible site of Newbury Castle.

The village was, for many years, the home of the Earls of Craven. William Craven, 1st Earl of Craven (1608-1697) built a vast palace there, originally intended as a residence for Charles I's sister, Elizabeth of Bohemia though she died before construction began. It burnt down in 1718. The Cravens later expanded a hunting lodge to live in instead.
