Hamptonburgh is a town located in the northern part of Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 4,686 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 69.8 km² (27.0 mi²). 69.4 km² (26.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.67%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,686 people, 1,467 households, and 1,226 families residing in the town. The population density was 67.6/km² (175.0/mi²). There were 1,532 housing units at an average density of 22.1/km² (57.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 93.62% White, 1.96% African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.47% Asian, 1.09% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.42% of the population.

There were 1,467 households out of which 44.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.6% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.4% were non-families. 13.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.10 and the average family size was 3.41.

In the town the population was spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $74,412, and the median income for a family was $82,561. Males had a median income of $54,650 versus $35,370 for females. The per capita income for the town was $27,909. About 2.7% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.1% of those under age 18 and 2.5% of those age 65 or over.

Hamptonburgh is a wider area, but the main center of Hamptonburgh is Campbell Hall. Campbell Hall is home to America's first butter factory. It is also the location of the Otterkill Fire Department and the Campbell Hall post office. Its economy is derived from a number of sources: The General Store, Campbell Hall Salvage, American Fence, a Service Station, the Bull's Head Inn, and a number of horse and dairy farms. Campbell Hall also is home to AHRC Occupations, the Otterkill Golf and Country Club, and a Metro-North train station.
