Hampton, New York

Hampton is a town in Washington County, New York, United States. It is part of the Glens Falls, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 871 at the 2000 census.

The Town of Hampton is in the northeast part of the county.

The town was formed in 1786 and was once called "Hampton Corners."

The eastern part of the town forms a border with Vermont.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 58.6 km² (22.6 mi²). 58.4 km² (22.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.35%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 871 people, 326 households, and 227 families residing in the town. The population density was 14.9/km² (38.6/mi²). There were 435 housing units at an average density of 7.4/km² (19.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.51% White, 0.57% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.11% Asian, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.03% of the population.

There were 326 households out of which 38.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 20.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $39,444, and the median income for a family was $46,250. Males had a median income of $29,107 versus $23,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,433. About 3.8% of families and 7.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.3% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.

  • Hampton -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town on Route 22A.
  • Hampton Flats -- A location north of Hampton village on Route 22A.
  • Low Hampton -- A hamlet on US Route 4 in the northeast part of the town.
