Hampstead Heath Constabulary

Hampstead Heath Constabulary is a small, specialised local police force responsible for policing Hampstead Heath, an area of open park land in London belonging to the Corporation of London

Police officers of this force have all the powers of a constable whilst in their limited jurisdiction of the Heath. There are 12 such officers, as well as police dogs, who provide 24 hour policing services to the Heath. The force is heavily supported by the Metropolitan Police, the local Home Office (regional) police force.

During the period January to September 2004 (inclusive) the Constabulary dealt with 1,066 incidents, including:

  • 344 byelaw incidents;
  • 471 miscellaneous incidents;
  • 251 criminal incidents;
  • 11 people were arrested including persons wanted on warrant, theft, drunk in charge of carriage and carrying an offensive weapon;
  • assisting the Metropolitan Police Service on over 70 occasions.

Any serious or major incidents or crimes on the Heath become the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police.
