Ham Island,[1] an island of the River Thames, was created when the course of the river was diverted, via a cut, to avoid a weir and provide a navigable route through to Old Windsor Lock. [1]. Today land use is divided between 37 privately-owned dwellings [2] and a water treatment plant. This locality is referred to in Three Men in a Boat[3] when, passing through the lock, they spy Windsor Castle in the distance. This trip is still popular today.[2]
