[edit] Plot summary
It's Halloween in Sunnydale and Xander and Willow warn Buffy not go out on Halloween if it's raining. See, the rain here is magical on Halloween and if it lands on a scarecrow that scarecrow will come alive with the spirit of Halloween, which is basically the evil Samhein who comes back every Halloween to hunt the Slayer. He's killed one before and nothing's going to stop him from getting to Buffy. While at a Halloween bash at The Bronze, Buffy is forced to go to the cemetery to fight the legions of the undead. After several fights she encounters Samhein, the Pumpkin King, who's ready and willing to take her life.
[edit] Trivia
- Tagline: 'He walks... He talks... He kills'.
- Buffyverse canon characters include: Buffy, Giles, Xander, Willow, Cordelia, Joyce, Aphrodesia
- Buffyverse non-canon characters include: Samhain (Pumpkin King); Glenn O'Leary (town nutcase); Claire Bellamy (Bronze manager); Nick Daniels (Bronze assistant manager). The Bronze managers also appear in The Evil That Men Do, and The Gatekeeper Trilogy.
- The first Buffy novel was written by the two authors who would go on to become some of the leading authors of Buffyverse novels.
[edit] Continuity
[edit] Canonical issues
Buffy novels, such as this one are considered by most fans to not be part of Buffyverse canon. They are not considered as official Buffyverse reality, but are novels from the authors' imaginations. However unlike fanfic, 'overviews' summarising their story, written early in the writing process, were 'approved' by both Fox and Whedon (or his office), and the books were therefore later published as official Buffy merchandise.
- The mystical rain that is specific to the day of Halloween is somewhat contradictory, to canon as is Gile's speech about Halloween being a particularly dangerous time for the Slayer. According to 'canon' Halloween is actually less demonic than other days. Vampires and demons are offended by the tackiness of the celebration. Many characters in canon repeatedly state that the day of Halloween has no significance. Such statements were made in "Halloween" and "All the Way". However, in "Fear, Itself", a mystical event takes place on Halloween, but the event is related to the location rather than the date. Golden revealed in an interview, that the book was written before the "Halloween" episode which contradicted elements of the novel Halloween Rain.[1]
