Halliford School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Halliford school is a selective and independent day school for boys and sixth form girls, located in Shepperton, Surrey. Halliford sixth-form which has only recently become co-education frequently produces a good crop of Oxbridge students. The school was founded in 1921 and the main building was once home to Emma, Lady Hamilton, Lord Nelson's mistress. Famous pupils have included Mark Lester who played Oliver Twist in Carol Reed's film adaptation, Oliver! and Mark Jones son of the singer Tom Jones. Halliford has an excellent sporting tradition and boys from the school have played sports such as rugby and basketball to the highest level.
The school motto is "Via firma ad firmora", which means "A firm path to firmer things". The school logo represents the bend in the river where the school is situated. The school is divided up into 3 houses, Wadham, Russell and Greville; represented by red, green, and blue respectively. The current headmaster of the school is Phillip Cottam, who became headmaster in 2002.
The small size of the school (approx. 380 boys) provides a friendly ethos where staff know everyone's names.
Halliford School has a link with Ediget Feleg School in Ethiopia and runs a successful pen-pal scheme with students from that school. The students send letters to the poor people in Ethiopia and talk about what they love, they then receive letters from their pen-pal in Ethiopia saying what they love.
