[edit] About Hakuoh

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Hakuoh's name loosely means "White Phoenix", which also reveals what deck theme he uses: the Light Civilization. It is rumored that when he was taken in by the Temple and he saw the stained glass windows of the chaple at the top it inspired him when he saw Hanusa The Radiance Elemental, Urth Purifying Elemental, and Alcadeias Lord of Spirits depicted in the art. But, at that moment when his training begins he slowly becomes a cold-hearted duelist. From what many believe he was taken in by the Temple at age 5, when he was orphaned. His family was a family of powerful duelists.

When his training started he caught onto the game very quickly and by the end of his first session, he defeated the teacher. A few months down the road and he was competing in small tournaments, winning one after another with his finishing move 'The White terror' which was Dia Nork, Moonlight Guardian, Urth, Purfying elemental, and Szubs (pronounced SHOE-bz) Kin The Twilight Guardian. By the time he was 13 he started competing in nationals and finally international competitions where from what the series says he competed against Shobu's father, Shori. Hakuoh defeated Shori easily, astounding the audience.

Later he met Mimi Tasogare, and the two started off as friends. From what the anime tells us Mimi and Hakuoh used to be dating and competing in tournaments together. Then after a tournament Hakuoh asks Mimi if she would like to be the Second Guardian of the Temple. This is a big honor, and it shows how good of a duelist you are. He then contacts his other past friends and they become the other three Temple Guardians.

We later see Hakuoh at the age of about 16 in a Tournament as an Exhibiton Match. This of course it to renew the worlds knowledge of him being the world champion. Hakuoh is facing a chinese chef, who uses a Fire Civilization deck. His deck is basically the same as Shobu's except with a rarer and more powerful version of Bolshok Dragon.

Hakuoh gives his speech that goes something like "The Duels that take place here today, will give us a glimpse into the future of champions of tomorrow. The duelists that succeed here today, will be the winners of tomorrow. And this Exhibiton match you see before you, will let one of you if you are willing to take my title." And with that he looks like he's about to commit suicide as he jumps straight off the 100 feet tall stage. But he lands and tosses his cloak to the side and takes out his deck. About 10 minutes pass and it looks as though all this time Hakuoh had been building Mana and playing small Blocker creatures to ward off his opponent's attacks.

The crowd starts to think that Hakuoh has lost his edge over the years, and so does Shobu. Of course Mimi being one of Shobu's friends is the only one who can guess what move Hakuoh is going to pull out. Then, right as Tobayashi destroys one of Hakuoh's Shields, a blazing light erupts from the card and taps all of the Fire duelists creatures. The entire crowd seems to be astounded by what has happened. Then with a blink of an eye Hakuoh uses 6 of his mana to summon Urth, Pufrying Elemental, Szubs Kin Twilight Guardian and Gran Gure Space Guarian. Also known as the 'Celestial Trinity' formation. With al of the opponents creatures tapped. Hakuoh plays Sword of Alcadeias which grants all of his creatures Double Breaker. Then he plays Ra Vu the Storm Chaser and makes the opponents Shield Triggers disabled. With a final command, Hakuoh wipes out the opponent within 30 seconds. The opponent asks to shake his hand and Hakuoh simply says "Whatever, your a waste of my time." Then he puts on his cloak and exits the Arena.

Skip forward a couple of episodes and we find that Shobu is bashing through the Temple players. When he gets to the Second Guardian, Mimi reveals that she is the Second Guardian. Shobu duels her despite their friendship, and she actually starts to squish Shobu with the Light Civilization cards that Hakuoh had added to her deck. In the end Mimi uses a card incorrectly and Shobu wipes her out. Next Shobu beats the Third Guardian and is confronted by Koshiro Kokujo, the Shinigami (Death god) Duelist. While Shobu and Kokujo duels, Mr. Knight (Hakuoh's past mentor) confronts Hakuoh and tries to make him see that Hakuoh has become a ruthless and cold-hearted duelist, which he never wanted him to be. Hakuoh says that Mr. Knight is just jealous that he is better than him.

Just as Knight is about to challenge Hakuoh to a Kaijudo (Spirit) Duel inside the Chapel, an explosion from Shobu's duel causes a Chandelier to fall and smash the playing table, and it shatters the stained glass which depcits Urth, Hanusa, And Alcadeias. Hakuoh mentions that Shobu will die fightning Kokujo, and Knight runs off to stop the duel.

Later after the match has ended, and it's the next day. Hakuoh prepares to fight Shobu in a Kaijudo Duel. But, this isn't any normal Kaijudo match. Whenever a Shield is broken, the pane of energy shatters into hundreds of jagged shards that'll shoot towards the crowd because of the way Shobu is facing. As the match progresses, Hakuoh only destroys a shield or two, but as Shobu begins to gather his forces Hakuoh says "Although my Master said to play with you and slowly crush, I'm through with that..." And with that he taps all of his mana to evolve Urth into Alcadeias, Lord of Spirits. With a swift move Hakuoh plays Celestial Shield which gives Alcadeias the Quadruple Breaker ability plus 4,000 more power adding him to 14,500. Alcadeias slaughters all of Shobu's Blockers and then personally slays Bolshok. Then Hakuoh wipes out all of Shobu's shields with a few more creatures. Just as Shobu is about to be killed the attack activates a Shield Trigger and Shobu summons evolution card Valdios that is a Fire Civilization with lots of guns, and he blows up Alcadeias. With his fighting spirit of Urth, Hanusa and Alcadeias crushed Hakuoh asks Shobu to end him right there, but Shobu refuses and the match ends in a Draw.

Since Hakuoh is no longer a cold-hearted person his hair changes from light blue to Blonde, and he then later on in the next season is a good guy with a new Nature and Light deck, and in season three he uses a Light and Water deck.

Spoilers end here.

Hakuoh is voiced by Doug Erholtz in Season 2 and 3.
