Hakkâri

Hakkâri (Çölemerik, Kurdish: Colemêrg) is a city in the far southeast of Turkey. The region surrounding Hakkâri came under Ottoman control, but local rule remained in the hands of local Kurdish emirs up to the 19th century. [1]
The name Hakkâri comes from the Assyrian word Ekkare (ܐܟܪ̈ܐ), meaning 'farmers'. Today the city has a population of 58,145 (2000 census) and is the capital of Hakkâri Province.
The province is the birthplace of the renowned 17th century Kurdish poet Ahmad Khani.
