HaKerayot

HaKerayot (Hebrew: הקריות, also transliterated HaQrayot or HaQerayot) is an urban area in Israel, a conglomeration of five smaller towns located about 10km north of Haifa in the Haifa District, which as of 2004 contains:

  1. Kiryat Yam 38,000 people.
  2. Kiryat Motzkin 39,500 people.
  3. Kiryat Bialik 36,800 people.
  4. Kiryat Atta 48,900 people.
  5. Kiryat Haim 40,000 people. (within the municipal borders of Haifa)

Many arrived after 1990, following the large aliyah from the collapsing Soviet Union. The immigrant population of HaKerayot, excluding Kiryat Haim, was 41,500 at the end of 2004.

There have been several proposals (notably, in 2003), for HaKerayot to be united into one big city called Zevulun with a population of about 250,000 people, which would make it one of the ten largest cities in Israel. While none of the proposals were approved, the last one has not been repealed.
