Haiku Society of America

The Haiku Society of America is a non-profit organization composed of haiku poets, editors, critics, publishers and enthusiasts that promotes the composition and appreciation of haiku in English. It was founded in 1968 and sponsors meetings, lectures, workshops, readings and contests. As of 2006-12-30, it consisted of 832 members in the United States and other nations.

The Society publishes a journal, Frogpond, first published in 1977 that includes the work of HSA members and others, articles on haiku and book reviews. It also publishes a quarterly newsletter containing reports of HSA national meetings, held four times a year, and news of regional, national and international events.

The HSA was founded in 1968 by Harold G. Henderson and Leroy Kanterman with 21 charter members who attended its first meeting in New York City. It's stated goals were to:

Promote the creation and apprecaition of haiku and related forms (haibun, haiga, renku, senryu, sequences and tanka) among its members and the public.
Foster association, friendship, communication and mutual support among haiku poets in the United States and around the world.
