[edit] Introduction

In Islam, there are several hadith where Muhammad has made prophecies about a future savior, the Mahdi. He is said to come together with Jesus, son of Mary. Twelver Shia beliefs hold that he is their twelfth Imam and will return (rather than appear for the first time as is believed by Zaydi Shia and Sunni Muslims). [edit] Shi'a view

Shi'a state that the Mahdi is the 12th Shi'a Imam: Muhammad al-Mahdi. Shi'a view the Mahdi and Jesus son of Mary to be alive but not present. Shi'a here say that the important element here that needs to be stressed is that Jesus will then pray behind the Mahdi as a direct statement regarding Jesus’ inferiority of rank to the Mahdi. Shi'a view this as a confirmation of the Shi'a concept of the twelves Imams being lesser in rank to the prophet Muhammad, but higher in rank than Jesus son of Mary.[citation needed]
