This is a sub-article to the Succession to Muhammad

A famous recorded oral tradition among Muslims (Arabic: Hadith) is about an event involving Abu Bakr, whom Sunni Muslims regard as the successor to prophet Muhammad (Arabic: Caliph).

The narration stats that Muhammad ordered Abu Bakr to lead the prayer when he was too sick to do that, due to his terminal illness. Although the narration is prominently quoted and referred to, it is not given any formal name, in contrast to other hadith such as the Hadith of the pond of Khumm or the Hadith of Qur'an and Sunnah

[edit] Narration

When the illness of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) became serious while I was with him among a group of people, Bilal called him for prayer. He said: Ask someone to lead the people in prayer. So Abdullah ibn Zam'ah went out and found that Umar was present among the people and AbuBakr was not there. I said: Umar, get up and lead the people in prayer. So he came forward and uttered "Allah is Most Great". When the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) heard his voice, as Umar had a loud voice, he said: Where is AbuBakr? Allah does not allow that, and the Muslims too; Allah does not allow that, and the Muslims too. So he sent for AbuBakr. He came after Umar had led the people in that prayer. He then led the people in prayer.

Muslims have differing views of this narration

[edit] Sunni view

Sunnis view this hadith as authentic and as an indication that Muhammad wanted Abu Bakr to be his successor.

[edit] Shi'a view

This narration is only present in sunni narrations therefore shias give this narration little credibility. There are however other narrations where Abu Bakr bagan to lead prayers while the Prophet was suffering illness, when the prophet heard Abu Bakr beginning the prayer, he stood even in his weak state, pushed Abu Bakr aside and led the prayer himself showing the lack of trust the prophet had in Abu Bakr.
