Hacklebarney State Park

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hacklebarney State Park is state park of the U.S. state of New Jersey, located between Long Valley and Chester in Morris County. The park contains 977 acres of land in a glacial valley carved by the Black River and its tributaries, the Rinehart and Trout Brook. The woodlands feature hemlock and other oak hardwoods, rare plants such as Virginia pennywort and leatherwood and endangered species wood turtle, Cooper's hawk and barred owl, over 100 species of birds altogether.[1]

The land was mined for iron ore during the 18th and 19th centuries, with the final mine closing in 1896, leading to economic devestation of the area. The land for a park was donated to the state in 1924.

It was the scene of a mafia execution in The Sopranos episode From Where to Eternity.
