H M Seervai

H M Seervai is an Indian Supreme Court lawyer and constitutional scholar of great renown. He was formerly the Advocate General of Maharashtra for 17 years (as yet unequalled) and a prolific author.

H M Seervai born in Bombay on 5th December 1906.Completed law and Joined Bar in 1929 & started the practice under Shri.Jamshedji Kanga. Career spanning 65 years at bar. Argued in the famous case of Keshavnand Bharti,which is known as Fundamental rights case,before the largest Bench of 13 Judges of the Supreme Court. Also appeared in Judges transfer case, in which he appeared to challenge the right of Government to transfer Judges without their consent. His book on Constitution of India is an authority.

The President of India conferred on Seervai the Padma Vibhushan in 1972 primarily for his Magnum Opus - Constitutional Law of India. Seervai was also selected to be a member of the British Academy in 1981. In 1994, the International Bar Association awarded Seervai the "Living Legend of Law" award for recognition of his services to the profession of law.

He wrote the controversial "Partition of India: Legend and Reality" in 1990 which challenged the existing view of history in India, which blamed partition on the Muslim League. He argued instead that it was the latent bias on the part of Indian National Congress leadership which resulted in partition.
