[edit] A Decade in Southeast Asia

Bill Bishop spent ten years in Southeast Asia directing and developing advertising programs for some of the world's leading brands. He spearheaded an interactive division at his agency in Singapore, making his agency among the first of the top tier agencies to offer an integrated online advertising and marketing range of services.

[edit] Home Again Home Again

Returning to Canada in 2000, Bishop, a second-generation Vancouverite immediately formed a society to raise the profile of the Steller's Jay among local and provincial officials. Finding plenty of support in the community, Bishop moved to formalise the local advocacy in the Steller's Jay Survival Society.

The Steller's Jay Survival Society works to limit and end farming practices which threaten the habitat, breeding ground and population of the indigenous Steller's Jay. Among various threats, the local famers' annual culling of the Jays by local farmers in Southwestern British Columbia is the most serious.

Natural breeding patterns and habit has been greatly compromised by farmers' use of bird cannon to interupt nesting and scare birds from the commercial crops. The Society has noted a marked decline in the Jay population, according to annual record keeping.

Among berry farmers, the Jays are considered pests and are blamed for everything from low crop yields to pestilence and harvetsting problems. None of these claims has been proven by either Agriculture Canada, municiple governments or local farming associations.

[edit] Wildlife Work is Changing Minds

While public sympathy and awareness is starting to grow, support from wildlife associations and government agencies has not been forthcoming. Despite this, Bill Bishop and his Society have already made important alliances and believe they are slowly changing the attitudes and actions of local berry farmers.
