Hāna is a census-designated place (CDP) in Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 709 at the 2000 census. Hāna is located at the eastern end of the island of Maui and is one of the most isolated towns in the state. It is reached mainly via the Hāna Highway, a long, winding highway along Maui's northern shore.

Near Hāna are several swimming holes in the Haleakalā National Park. Hāna has a small jetty and an airport with regular service.

Hāna is located at 20°46′12″N, 155°59′39″W (20.770017, -155.994179)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²). 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it (37.64%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 709 people, 191 households, and 139 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 126.2/km² (326.0/mi²). There were 253 housing units at an average density of 45.0/km² (116.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 13.26% White, 0.14% African American, 6.91% Asian, 39.92% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 39.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.35% of the population.

There were 191 households out of which 29.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% were married couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.71 and the average family size was 4.40.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 22.7% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,833, and the median income for a family was $54,167. Males had a median income of $26,146 versus $22,969 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $14,672. About 5.6% of families and 8.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.4% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.

[edit] Interesting facts

  • "Hana Bay Rum" is not made in Hanā but by "Hawaiian Distillers" in California. According to locals, it was originally distilled in Maui but the company went bankrupt and when the brand was purchased, production was moved to the mainland. The Rum is scheduled to relocate operations back to Hawaiʻi and be produced by Hawaiian Distillers in Pāʻia, Maui.
