Gyakuten Saiban 3 (逆転裁判3? lit. "Turnabout Courtroom 3") is an adventure/visual novel game developed by Capcom for the Game Boy Advance video game console. It is the third game in the Gyakuten Saiban series (also known as the Ace Attorney/Phoenix Wright series), and preceeds Gyakuten Saiban 4 for the Nintendo DS. At present, it is the only released Gyakuten Saiban game that Capcom has no localization plans announced, mainly because at present no Nintendo DS remake has been announced. A moderator on the Capcom Forums has stated that this game being translated depends heavily on sales and preorders of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All.[1]

At the moment, Capcom has announced an official contest to convince “Capcom to bring Ace Attorney 3 to America”, heavily implying they will localize the game.

A PC version under the title Gyakuten Saiban 3 PC was released by the Japanese company SourceNext in March 31, 2006. This port follows the previous ones by being a port of the original Game Boy Advance version to be played on Windows based PCs.

[edit] Gameplay

Gameplay is much like previous installments in the series. When in court, the player must find contradictions in witnesses' testimonies and point them out by browsing through evidence and profiles of related characters. Outside court, the game acts much like a point-'n-click adventure. The player must then talk to people through a simple menu-based interface as well as find clues.

[edit] Characters

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Returning characters

  • Ryuichi Naruhodou (成歩堂 龍一 Naruhodō Ryūichi)/ Phoenix Wright - Phoenix reprises his lead role for the third game in the series. He is also the defendant of the first case of the game.
  • Chihiro Ayasato (綾里 千尋 Ayasato Chihiro)/ Mia Fey - Phoenix's mentor and defense attourney in the flashback cases of the game (The first and fourth ones)
  • Mayoi Ayasato (綾里 真宵 Ayasato Mayoi)/ Maya Fey - Maya reprises her role as Phoenix's assistant.
  • Reiji Mitsurugi (御剣 怜侍 Mitsurugi Reiji)/ Miles Edgeworth - Phoenix's former prosecutor opponent from the first game. It was revealed that his first case as a prosecutor was also Mia Fey's first case as a defense attorney. He also takes Phoenix's role in the first half of the last trial of the game when Phoenix becomes incapacitated.
  • Mei Karuma (狩魔冥 Karuma Mei)/ Franziska von Karma - Phoenix's former prosecutor opponent from the second game. She returns in order to face Phoenix for the last trial, but ends up facing Edgeworth instead.
  • Harumi Ayasato (綾里春美 Ayasato Harumi)/Pearl Fey- Mia's and Maya's young cousin. She's the daughter of Morgan Fey, as well as Mia's and Maya's younger cousin.
  • Masashi Yahari (矢張政志 Yahari Masashi)/Larry Butz - Phoenix's best friend since grade school. In this game, he helps out in the investigations for the second and last trials, and he's the one responisble for getting Miles Edgeworth involved in the last trial.
  • Takefumi Auchi (亜内武文 Auchi Takefumi)/ Winston Payne- Seen in a flashback, Winston was at one time, unlike now, highly arrogant and cocky, while taking pride in his massive pompadour haircut. He loses this attitude (and his hair) after an upset victory by Mia Fey, which acts as the first case.

[edit] New characters

  • Souryuu Kaminogi/Godot - A defense attorney who became Mia Fey's lover, and was thought to be dead (poisoned) six months before the first case of the game by Chinami Miyanagi. However, as the game progress, it was revealed that he was only in a coma, though he was blinded, thus needed a special visor to see, and his hair had turned color from brown to white. Once Kaminogi was released from hospital, Redd White had already killed Mia. Souryuu blamed Phoenix for not being able to protect her, which led him to become a prosecutor, in order to oppose Phoenix. Souryuu is known to drink up to 17 cups of coffee a day. Godot's name is derived from the play "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett.

In the courtroom, Godot is sly, sarcastic, and cocky, but remains composed and unrelenting.

  • Chinami Miyanagi - The murderer in the first and fourth case in the game and former nominal girlfriend of Phoenix Wright, Chinami appears to be fragile and innocent, which she uses to charm everyone on to her side. She was brought up by her father, whom she hated, which led to the events of the fourth case in the game, where she plotted to steal her father's prized diamond along with Michiru Onamida. However, Chinami's step-sister, Yuuki Miyanagi, saw the couple as they were executing the plot. Chinami threw herself into the Godou River along with the diamond. Thinking Onamida had pushed Chinami into the river, Yuuki had Onamida arrested for Chinami's murder. Chinami's body wasn't found, as she was found at the river bank located at Hazakurain, where she was nursed back to health by birth sister Ayame.

During the trial of Yuuki Miyanagi's murder (case 4 of the game), Chinami claimed to be a witness under the pseudonym "Satoko Mukui". During the trial, when Mia Fey and Souryuu Kaminogi tried to implicate Chinami as the murderer, she killed the defendant (indirectly), Michiru Onamida, who drank a vial of poison which Chinami gave to him earlier and said was a "proof of their love".

As a result, the case collapsed and Chinami was free. However, Souryuu, determined to put her behind bars, began to pursue her and managed to talk to her six months after the trial. However, Chinami poisoned Souryuu's coffee, which appeared to have killed him. Chinami was questioned for the crime but was released due to lack of evidence. The reason for the lack of evidence was because she had hid the evidence of her crime with the clueless Phoenix, whom she met in the court after the murder took place.

[edit] Storyline

The story of Gyakuten Saiban 3 has cases which precede the first Gyakuten Saiban.

[edit] Turnabout Memories

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The first case of the game takes place 5 years before the events of Gyakuten Saiban 3 (three years before Gyakuten Saiban), when Phoenix Wright is still a university student. The player character is switched to Mia Fey. Phoenix is accused of murdering a fellow college student by the name of Kikuzou Nonda. The cause of death is electrocution. Chinami Miyanagi, Phoenix's girlfriend at the time, stole the Cold-Killer Z medicine that Phoenix was taking for his cold. Using poison stolen from the medical lab the night before the incident, she poisoned the medicine in hopes that Phoenix would take it and die, so that she could get the evidence for a case that happened 6 months ago and trash it. She was about to give it to him until she saw Kikuzou warning to Phoenix about the fate that lay ahead. Phoenix, not believing him, struck Kikuzou, who hit the ground on top of his umbrella, breaking it. Phoenix panicked and ran away. At the same time, the shock from the altercation caused a nearby weakened high-voltage wire to snap. Kikuzou got up and Chinami Miyanagi, seeing the wire dangling, killed him to keep him quiet. A couple of minutes later, Phoenix came back to find Kikuzou dead. When he saw the medical students coming out of the lab to investigate the cause of the power outage, he fled and was thus accused for Kikuzou's murder.

At the end of the trial, it is shown how Prosecutor Winston Payne lost his hair.

[edit] Stolen Turnabout

The second case in this game brings the player back to current time, where Phoenix is given the unenviable task of defending a man who claims to be guilty of stealing the Kurain Urn (from the second case in the second game). It turns out that things are more complicated than they first seem.

Introduces Godot, the coffee-swilling philosopher in the prosecutor's chair.

[edit] Turnabout Recipe

The third case takes place after a magazine reports Phoenix's humiliating defeat against Prosecutor Winston Payne. The oddest part is that Phoenix never even took that case. In order to find the imposter and correct the verdict, Phoenix Wright must appeal the case of a familiar face.

[edit] Original Turnabout

This case takes the player back to Mia Fey's first case where she is defending Michiru Onamida, an escaped death row convict. Also, this case features a young Miles Edgeworth as well as a completely unfamiliar judge.

[edit] Magnificent Turnabout

Phoenix Wright finds himself drawn into past grudges when he heads to Hazakurain to meet with Ayame. Not only is she is implicated in the murder of famous illustrator Elise Tenryuusai, but Maya is in danger again. As links to several old cases are revealed, old rivals return to lend Phoenix their strength.

[edit] Fan translation

There is a fan translation available of Gyakuten Saiban 3. The translator has successfully translated all of case one and part of case four. A translation patch for case one was released in January 2006. However, the project is currently on hiatus awaiting news of an official localization. [2]
