GXS was founded in 1967 as a pioneer in business-to-business electronic commerce. Originally a division of the General Electric Company (GE Information Systems), GXS is now a private corporation headquartered in Gaithersburg, MD. GXS has developed services and expertise for a variety of vertical markets most notably retail/consumer packaged goods, high tech/manufacturing, automotive and finance/banking. With a workforce of more than 2,000 today, GXS has operations throughout every industrialized country and most emerging markets, including China and the Philippines. Regional headquarters locations include Hong Kong, London, San Paulo, Shanghai, Sydney, and Tokyo. The company operates secure data centers in the US, the Netherlands, and Hong Kong. GXS' primary research and development centers are located at Gaithersburg, MD & Raleigh, NC in the US as well as at London,UK; Bangalore, India and Manila, Philippines. GXS also has several blogs dedicated to the open discussion and advancement of B2B e-commerce.

GXS today is under the ownership of leading technology investment firms Francisco Partners and Norwest Venture Partners. Based in Menlo Park, California, Francisco Partners, is a leading global private equity firm with over $5 billion of committed capital under management. Norwest Venture Partners manages more than $2.5 billion of venture capital backed investments and is based in Palo Alto, California.

GXS provides business-to-business EDI and on-demand supply chain integration, synchronization and collaboration solutions. The company operates the world's largest global integration services platform - the GXS Trading Grid. GXS Trading Grid is a high-performance integration services platform that enables the real-time flow of information between businesses regardless of technical capability, standards preferences, spoken language or geographic location. By combining the security and best practices of traditional e-commerce networks with the agility and responsiveness of the Internet, GXS Trading Grid offers significant speed and cost advantages over traditional, do-it-yourself integration solutions. In 2005, the GXS Trading Grid processed more than 4 billion business documents.
In 2004, GXS acquired HAHT Commerce launching its global data synchronization strategy. In 2005, GXS acquired the EDI and Business Exchange Services assets of IBM Corporation greatly strengthening its presence in the U.S., Japan, Europe, and Latin America and deepening its ability to serve the financial services industry[1].
In November 2004, webMethods and GXS formed a strategic partnership to create next generation B2B solutions, that combined webMethods best-of-breed integration software with GXS's global integration services platform, GXS Trading Grid.
In May 2006, Microsoft and GXS formed a strategic partnership to integrate Microsoft technologies with the GXS Trading Grid. Microsoft endorsed the GXS Trading Grid as its recommended network for Microsoft BizTalk Server
In November 2006, GXS acquired UDEX, the world's leading provider of Product Data Quality solutions. As an on-demand solution for product data cleansing, validation and certification, UDEX is a strong complement to the GXS Trading Grid portfolio. The company's solutions are currently marketed as UDEX - A GXS Service.
In China, GXS maintains strategic partnership with locally-based organizations to serve the local high-technology and automotive industries respectively.[citation needed] Other partners include eBridge, epcSolutions, Hitachi Data Systems, IBM, IVANs, JDA Software, Liaison Technologies, Symbol, Verizon Communications and Zebra[citation needed].
