[edit] History

In the anime series Gundam X, the GX-9900 Gundam X ("GX") is one of three advanced mobile suits created by the United Nations Earth ("UNE") Space Force to fight against the Space Revolutionary Army ("SRA"). The Gundam X was the most powerful of the three models mainly because of its powerful weapon, the Satellite Cannon, which was specifically designed to destroy space colonies. This cannon was powered by a super-microwave energy beam which was transmitted from a solar power station on the moon. Like all Gundams from the 7th Space War era, the GX features a Flash System that is used to control a group of unmanned Bit mobile suits. The Bit model designed for the GX is the FX-9900 GX-Bit, which is also armed with the satellite cannon. Its primary limitation was that only a Newtype could activate the Flash System and initialize the Satellite System.

Other armaments of the Gundam X are a large beam sword, a pair of breast vulcan guns and a hand-carried shield that can be fold into a buster rifle. In addition, the Gundam X can be docked with the GS-9900 G-Falcon fighter for increase mobility and additional armaments.

Since it was considered to be the most dangerous of mobile suits, the Gundam X has a special anti-theft system. The removable G-controller stick is needed to activate a Gundam X. This controller has been shown to activate any other GX, and later in the series, the Double X.

The Gundam X was used at the end of the Seventh Space War in an attempt to stop the SRA from dropping space colonies on the Earth. During this time, Jamil Neate was the pilot of a Gundam X and he used his Gundam and a large army of GX-Bits to destroy a colony which was positioned for a drop on the Earth. In response, the SRA dropped dozens of colonies on the Earth. Nearly all of the new Gundam X units were destroyed during this time but one unit survived and was hidden in a destroyed military base.

Fifteen years later this unit was found by 15-year-old Garrod Ran who later joined the crew of the Freeden. When he and Tiffa Adill, a mysterious Newtype girl, are cornered by renegade mobile suit riders, she registers the Satellite Cannon with the lunar base, and Garrod fires the weapon, obliterating their enemies. He is later able to use the Cannon without a fully-functioning Newtype in the cockpit. The GX was later heavily damaged by Carris Nautilus' RMSN-008 Bertigo but was repaired and modified by Kid Salsamille into the GX-9900-DV Gundam X Divider. After the GX-9901-DX Gundam Double X is stolen by Garrod from the New UNE, Kid modified the control systems so that Jamil Neate could pilot the GX without the G-controller.

Three GX units are known to have survived into the After War era. One was found and piloted by Garrod. The second was Jamil's old unit which New United Nations Earth studied to develop the Double X. The third was found in A.W. 0024 by Vultures Rick Arel and Rosa II, aboard a sunken UNE submarine. A mysterious, unstable Newtype named Kai was found in suspended animation in the cockpit, but Arel soon gained possession of the Gundam. Unlike the unit Garrod discovered, this Gundam X was black, though it was soon repainted in the standard white color scheme. As it lacked the shield buster rifle, Arel's Gundam X was refitted with a more conventional shield and beam rifle. Although the Satellite System's lunar station had been destroyed in A.W. 0015, Arel's Gundam X was able to receive microwave energy and fire the Satellite Cannon, revealing that a new station has been built to replace the old one.

[edit] FX-9900 (GX-9900-GB) GX-Bit

In the anime series Gundam X, the Old United Nations Earth introduced the Gundam-type mobile suit in the 7th Space War to fight against the Space Revolutionary Army. Each Gundam featured a flash system, which allowed a Newtype to remotely control a number of bit mobile suits. The FX-9900 (GX-9900-GB) GX-Bit was one such a bit (G-Bit) and it was used by the GX-9900 Gundam X. The only weapons of GX-Bit were the same satellite cannon, a beam rifle, and beam sword which are used by the Gundam X. When the SRA wanted to drop a colony on the Earth, Jamil Neate, in this time pilot of a Gundam X, used the GX-Bits to destroy the colony which should be dropped but he wasn’t able to stop the mass colony drop of the SRA. A few GX-Bits survived the war and ended up at the bottom of the Sea of Lorelei. Fifteen years later they were salvaged by Olba Frost to secure them for the New United Nations Earth but later Jamil used and then he finally destroyed them.

[edit] FX-9900-D G-Bit (D.O.M.E)

The FX-9900-D G-Bit (D.O.M.E) (also called D.O.M.E-Bit) is a G-Bit based on the FX-9900 GX-Bit to protect the secret of D.O.M.E on a base on the moon. The FX-9900-D G-Bit (D.O.M.E) has the same equipment as the standard GX-Bit but also featured some extra weapons. (Its model number give a clue that it might be GX-9900 Gundam X modified into Mobile Bit.) Thanks to the extreme Newtype powers of D.O.M.E., the FX-9900-D G-Bit (D.O.M.E) protected the base for more than 15 years, until the New United Nations Earth and the Space Revolutionary Army began fighting for it.

In the anime series Gundam X, the GX-9900-DV Gundam X Divider is the rebuilt GX-9900 Gundam X, which was severely damaged by the RMSN-008 Bertigo. Kid Salsamille, the mechanic of the Freeden, was the one who rebuilt the mobile suit. Although the satellite cannon could not be repaired, Kid equipped the Gundam X Divider with new weapons and other equipment. The most notable armament is the Divider, a shield that featured built-in thrusters and 13 beam cannons. The Divider could be mounted on The Gundam X Divider's back to serve as additional thrusters and can be used as a hand-carried weapon by deploying the beam cannons to become a blast-scattering beam cannon (The Divider with beam cannons deployed is also called the Harmonica cannon as a nickname). The shield buster rifle was also replaced by a 2-barrel beam machinegun. While the Flash System was still available, the modification made the Gundam X Divider no longer compatible with the G-Falcon fighter.
After this upgrade the new GX was better than the old version in terms of conventional maneuverability and firepower. The Divider was still piloted by Garrod Ran but after the Freeden captured the new GX-9901-DX Gundam Double X, the Divider was then piloted by Jamil Neate. Because the Divider still needed the G-controller (which was now used by the Double X and the crew of the Freeden only had 1). Kid modified the Divider's cockpit so that he could be piloted without the Controller. The GX Divider served as Jamil's personal mobile suit until the end of the war in AW 0015.

The GX-9901-DX Gundam Double X is a fictional mobile suit from the anime Gundam metaseries, specifically the Gundam X series' After War timeline.

[edit] History

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In the anime series Gundam X, the Double X is a Gundam-type mobile suit built under the supervision of New United Nations Earth (New UNE) Intelligence Minister Aimzat Kartral, and was intended to symbolize the strength of the new Earth regime as the main firepower of the fleet. As they could not capture any Flash System compatible Newtypes, they used a wrecked GX-9900 Gundam X—the very same unit that was piloted by Jamil Neate in the 7th Space War—as a base for the new Gundam.

The crew of the Freeden tries to investigate another possible Gundam X, but they are forced to surrender under the threat of the Double X's Satellite Cannon, and become prisoners of the New UNE at the Zonda Epta island base. Shortly thereafter, they are able to flee, and Freeden pilot Garrod Ran steals the Gundam Double X, and pilots it until the final battle of the series.

The Gundam Double X is a much stronger version of the older Gundam X. The availability of Jamil's wrecked GX, as well as the fact that it was able to contact the lunar base, strongly suggests that the Satellite System ID from Jamil's unit was copied to the Double X, or that the old hardware was used in the construction of the Double X[1]. This allows non-Newtypes, such as Garrod Ran, to activate and fire its Twin Satellite Cannon. The Double X's Twin Satellite Cannon barrels are latched onto the shoulder armor when it is deployed, so it can fire hands-free, whereas the GX had to stabilize its barrel with both hands. With a larger microwave collector surface area and more efficient heat dissipation than its predecessor, the Double X is able to fire its Satellite Cannons with a shorter cooldown time, something it demonstrated to SRA President Zaider Rasso when it interrupted Operation Daria.

However, the Flash System is not included in its design, so the Gundam Double X cannot control Bit mobile suits like its predecessor. Although it is among the newest UNE mobile suit designs, the Gundam Double X can dock with the GS-9900 G-Falcon fighter without any modifications.

Similar to the GX, a removable G-controller stick is needed to activate the Gundam Double X and activate its Satellite System. A G-controller was created for use with the Double X, but the new unit is compatible with the one designed for the original GX.

In the final battle between New United Nations Earth and Space Revolutionary Army, the Double X was severely damaged in a duel with the Frost brothers, and is adrift in lunar orbit at the series' close.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Trivia

  • The buster rifle and shield carried by the Double X in the series are actually provided by Freeden chief mechanic Kid Salsamille, as any possible hand-carried armaments (other than the beam swords) would have been destroyed by the first firing of the Twin Satellite Cannon.
  • Some of the Double X's optional armaments—specifically, the G-hammer, twin beam sword, beam javelin, and rocket launcher—are found only in its Gunpla 1/100 kit, and are never seen in use in the series proper. However, a spiked ball, possibly that of the G-hammer, is briefly seen in a hangar during episode 37, indicating that the optional weapons were simply never used due to the series being cancelled 10 episodes early.
  • Although the Double X in the anime apparently does not include the Flash System, the Double X that is featured in the Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden video game (and others in the series) can operate D.O.M.E. G-Bits. In this setting, Tiffa Adill is the sub-pilot of the Double X, as Garrod cannot interface with the Flash System and operate Bit mobile suits.
