Established in 2002, the Guyana tourism Authority's main responsibility is to promote the sustainable development of tourism in Guyana that produces maximum economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits while minimizing negative impacts as part of an integral national development strategy through the optimal use of human resources and the provision of a product of the highest quality.

The Tourism Authority recognises tourism as a medium by which the country can derive significant economic benefits. With this in mind many programs have been and continue to be developed, these include a three (3) year birding plan Official Guyana Birding Website, our yachting plan and guide and our 5 year tourism Development action plan. In addition to the afore mentioned plans our 5 year development plan focuses on specific areas for development such as infrastructure, air access,Human resource, destination marketing, community development, Touristic attraction development, to name a few.

The Authority also have intensive marketing and branding strategies that help them to "sell" Guyana to the world,no easy task and considering the fact that it is a relatively young organisation. In spite of this they have managed to produce several Maps, Posters and other collateral material as well as contribute to several annual and monthy publications including the annual Official Tourist Guide, Explore Guyana. They have also embarked on a serious Internet Marketing Program which will allow them to use the internet as a medium to market to, at last count, over one billion potential internet users.

The Tourism Authority also attend many local, regional and international trade shows geared at tourism and niche market promotion.
