Guyana Airways
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Guyana Airways was the national airline of Guyana from 1973 to 2001. During this period, it operated services to destinations throughout the caribbean, the U.S. and Canada. It was declared insolvent in 2001.
The airline had a fleet including Russian Tupolevs to Boeings. At the time of the insolvency of the airline, the fleet consisted of Boeing 757s and 1 Airbus A.300B4-622R.
[edit] History
Guyana Airways was an important link for the Guyanese community. It provided a way into and out of the country. The airline leased all its aircraft, which is why many aircraft were used during the airline's operations. After the airline went bankrupt in 2001, its successor, Guyana Air 2000 maintained a shortlived operation until 2003, when it too, filed for insolvency.
[edit] Future
International airline operations to Guyana have been scarce as BWIA West Indies Airways has become the national airline of Guyana and is the main airline providing international service to the Guyanese community. The Guyanese government has expressed its interest in a new national airline.
