Gutter Brothers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gutter Brothers are a skiffle group.
They were formed in 1985 by Tony Green (vocals, washboard), Dennis Johnson (Tea Chest Bass), and John Woodall (aka Jonny Reptile). Other members over the next ten years were Chris Cawte (guitar), Cliff (Stoddy) Stoddard (guitar), Anthony Aldridge (violin), Dave Bounce (accordion), Fiona (the singing 'bottler'), Gary Reynolds (guitar), Johnny Hooper (saxophone), Carl Mellor (saxophone), Blue Lou the Aussie (mouth organ), Steve Turner, and Jeff Walker. They toured extensively in the United Kingdom and built up a loyal base of fans.
Long before it had become the norm, the Gutter Brothers recorded and sold their own music on their own label. Hyped only by their own street gigs and word of mouth, they built up a huge and loyal following around London, and to a lesser extent all over the UK and Ireland. the powerhaus and mean fiddler in London were the scenes of some of their biggest and best gigs.
In 1991 the Gutter Brothers wrote two TV soundtracks, for an ITV Comedy Drama starring Harry Enfield and Alison Steadman, called Gone To The Dogs and for the Only Fools and Horses Christmas special, Miami Twice.
The Gutter Brothers were inactive from 1995 to 2002 but reformed after the death of Dennis Johnson. They performed a memorial concert at the Mean Fiddler in 2003, did short tour of the UK in February 2005, and another tour in June 2006. They are to play a gig at the Borderline Club, London, with possible new material.
