The rationale behind deleting the Slovenian names of places in Austria is:

  • Putting an alternative name after every name in the article is cluttering.
  • Without an explanation why, it is also confusing.
  • Putting an explanation into every article on Carinthia and other bilingual areas would be more cluttering.

IMO, the sensible policy for names in multilingual areas seems to be:

  1. Use the English name, if one is in general use.
  2. If multilinguality is discussed, or if otherwise appropriate (i.e. listing of cities in an area), use all appropriate forms.
  3. Otherwise, use only the local name in the main official language and put the alternative forms into the first sentence of the articles on individual topics.
