[edit] Biography

The Guru
The Guru

After Murray leaves the gang to find his spiritual center, he ends up in the Outback of Australia. While there, he met the Guru, an aboriginal mystic. After training Murray in the art of the Dream Time, the Guru sends him on a world-wide walkabout. After Murray accomplishes his goals in Venice, he returns to the Outback with Sly and Bentley to gain permission to end his training. However, in his absence, the Guru has been abducted by local miners, and his powers have vanished because of the intrusion. Seeking the aid of Murray and co., the Guru regains his trusty gear and powers after his new friends recover the stick and Stone and drive the miners from Ayers Rock.

Contributing his mystic prowess to the team, Guru helps the gang destroy the local drill machines and the security copter. After the Mask of Dark Earth is destroyed, the Guru joins Sly and co. on their quest. Because of his mastery, the Guru is a pacifist, unable to directly harm anyone. Thus, pressing "Square", the attack button, does absolutely nothing while playing as Guru.

After the Cooper Vault Job, the Guru started taking students again. He even started teaching a famous rock band, (in fact, the same band shown playing at the theater where Octavio was formerly singing) which got him a lot of unwanted publicity. The last Bentley heard from him, he was hiding in Central Park, New York-figured it was the last place they'd ever look.

[edit] Powers

Tapping into the Aboriginal "Dream Time", the Guru can do several things, including disguising himself as various things that blend in, or taking over weak-minded enemies. At one point in the game he can even levitate objects, but you don't do this. He is also the appointed guardian of the Mask of Dark Earth. He channels his power through his walking staff and Moon Stone.

[edit] Trivia

  • When Murray is telling Sly and Bentley about the Guru, it showed a screenshot where Murray and the Guru duplicated a scene from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. In this scene, Murray played the part of Luke Skywalker carrying the Guru on his back, thus imitating the Jedi's training with Yoda.
  • The Guru's taking on of the rock band as students is a parody of the history of the Beatles.
  • The Guru speaks in an odd language which, oddly enough, can be understood by everyone except players/viewers of the game. The Guru's language is actually Diksha. A spiritual language, used only by those who've studied it, or by Diksha Gurus.
