The Naruto filler arcs are story arcs within the Naruto anime that do not occur within the manga. After eight seasons, 77 of 208, or more than a third of the episodes were filler, and there are no plans to animate new chapters of the manga until Spring 2007.[1]

[edit] Purpose

Naruto's manga serialization is ongoing. While the manga had a significant head start when the anime first began production, the anime eventually caught up, as each episode of the anime covers approximately 1¾ chapters of the manga. This is a common dilemma faced by popular, manga-based anime and the creators were left will four options. They could suspend the series (financially infeasible), deviate from the manga (as in Rurouni Kenshin), stretch out the story line (as in Dragon Ball Z) or insert filler arcs (as in Bleach).

[edit] Guide

#101 was the first to deviate from the manga.

Episode 101
Episode 101 was the first Naruto episode that wasn't canonical to the manga. It is technically an omake, so it may not be considered filler by some measures.
Episodes 102 to 106
After the omake, the first filler arc began, dealing with a race in the Land of Tea. This is the only arc to take place prior to the second part of the series, before the three-year timeskip.
Naruto the Movie
While the first Naruto movie is not officially part of the anime series, it is worth noting in the context of the Land of Tea arc. The arc and the movie both take place during roughly the same period in the overall narrative, and share several strong similarities. In both cases, there is an enemy with an impenetrable defense. Sasuke's chidori (千鳥? lit. one thousand birds), which could purportedly cut through anything, makes only a crack. Sasuke is knocked out of battle, and Naruto finishes the enemy off with his rasengan (螺旋丸 lit. spiraling sphere?). Since the movie was based off of a limited edition manga ((citation needed)), it may be considered more canonical than the Land of Tea arc. It could possibly be watched in place of the filler arc without a gap in the narrative. Either way, Sasuke dwells upon his defeat while he recovers at the start of episode 107.
Episodes 136 to 141
After the first part of the series ends, a long line of filler arcs begins, and this is the first. The events of this arc mostly have no equivalent in the manga, but there is an important exception. After the return to Konohagakure (the Hidden Leaf Village) all the scenes are, more or less, taken from the manga. Sakura does indeed become Tsunade's apprentice, and Tsunade did once propose the inclusion of a medical ninja in every squad.
Episodes 142 to …
None of the remainder of the anime series is based off of events in the manga. They will continue to be released until animation of the manga resumes sometime Spring 2007.
