Gunung Palung National Park

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gunung Palung National Park lies in the southern portion of the province of West Kalimantan, Indonesia, not far from the kabupaten city of Ketapang. The park is notable for its diversity of ecological zones, ranging from low-lying swampland to old-growth forests to mountains, and its diversity of wildlife. It is one of only a handful of locations in the world where orangutans continue to live in the wild.

Illegal logging in the park, particularly of ironwoods like durian, has been accelerating. A research station was forced to disband after loggers convinced authorities that the researchers had a threatening political agenda. Educational initiatives and ecotourism have thus far failed to compete with logging for use of the park.
