On August 23, 2000, Gulf Air Flight 072 crashed into the Persian Gulf on approach to Bahrain International Airport. The Airbus A320 with 143 passengers and crew on board was seen with one of its engines apparently on fire shortly before it disappeared from radar screens. There were no survivors. Tragically, an unusually large number of the dead were children, returning from holidays in the flight's originating city, Cairo. The accident investigation concluded that the cause of the disaster was pilot error.
