The Phase

The Phase. Two relatively meaningless words until you hear the first two powerful guitar chords of their primary song. This is all it takes to captivate you as the music sucks you in. The thunderous drums and the energetic guitar riffs continue throughout the song and enthrall the listener until the very end of this catchy tune. With a start like this, you know there will be more superb music where that came from. The Phase was technically started about three years ago when guitarists Mike Devine and Brian Richards one day decided to start taking guitar lessons to drown out the god-awful rap music coming from Andy’s room (Brian’s brother). They looked into to it and eventually found 3-D Guitars, a local guitar shop owned by Pete Smith. For the next year or so, Mike and Brian honed their sweet skills in hope of one day forming a kick-ass rock band. In the summer of 2005 Mike and Brian were introduced to bassist Mark King, and due to their practically identical tastes in music, Brian and Mike took an immediate liking to Mark, and vice-versa. Mark’s friend Matt Vito became the band’s drummer, and thus The Phase was born. The quartet played their first and second concerts at the Pembroke Town Green, filling the air with music, bringing people to the concert, and startling pigeons into flight. Eventually, for undisclosed reasons, the band parted ways. For a while, The Phase seemed dead. Over the next couple of months, Mike, Mark, and Brian saw each other less and less, until one day Mike and Brian received a call from Mark. “Dudes, how would you like to get together with a sick drummer?” Mike and Brian were eager to start the band back up, and subsequently met with this “sick drummer” as soon as possible. After about 15 minutes of intense jamming, jumping, thrashing and laughing, everyone felt that this would be a good relationship. So Sam O’Fihelly became The Phase’s new drummer. The Phase soon performed with their recently acquired percussionist at a Pembroke Middle School dance, and their performance was met with good reviews, and this collection of musicians turned their focus to the annual concert on the green in Pembroke Center. The concert came and The Phase covered some Van Halen, Blink 182, and closed the concert with Led Zeppelin’s “Achilles Last Stand.” When virtually everyone came to the conclusion that they were the best act, Mike, Mark, Brian and Sam were given the confidence boost that they needed to start writing their own songs. Recently, The Phase has come up with some solid ideas for songs. This coalition of musicians is also currently looking into obtaining a keyboarder and a new singer. With a debut CD due out in the next couple of months, you can expect to hear more from The Phase very soon.
